Making your own canvas, what an incredibly useful and fulfilling skill to have as an artist.
Wood sections, canvas material and staples
"There is much satisfaction in making your own materials and tools. It gives you the ability to not only make a work of art, but art of work itself."
To start with I nailed four pieces of wood together forming a box frame, measured by 30 X 40cm. I nailed triangular, corners of wood to the edges of the frame to support and add strength to the overall frame. By using sandpaper I relieved the insides of the wooden frame so the wood would not protrude into the canvas. Stretching the canvas over the frame tight was vital for me to insure the frame will not move when I paint onto it. I used a staple gun to secure the canvas to the wood and coated the canvas with two coats of PVA glue before giving it a final coat of Thixotopic Alkyd Primer.
